Microsoft still fighting a losing battle against Google

New Comscore data was released today which clearly shows how Google’s search share is continuing to rise, and despite Microsoft’s best efforts (even giving away prizes to searchers), they are at best stagnant. Year-over-year, Microsoft’s search share went from 9.7% down to 8.5% while Google rose from 58.5% to 63.1% according to the research.

A question that Microsoft executives and shareholders should be asking themselves is how viable their $1.2billion/year search budget actually is. In fact, I think Microsoft could do more damage to Google by leaving the search space than if they stuck around.

  • A look into the past : Google
  • You Tube to Offer TV Shows
  • Google Android Phone’s Premier
  • MGM, CBS join Google’s YouTube
  • Spending extra cash on areas like mobile, their operating system and retaining enterprise clients could help keep Google from growing in those areas. Who knows, if they leave the space, that extra 8.5% search share (assuming they go back to Google) could help raise concern from legislators about potential anti-competitive issues — something Microsoft would love to see happen.

If you were Steve Ballmer, would you gracefully leave the search space, or would you hope that your search share goes up over time? If you would “stay the course”, what kind of things would you do to be more competitive?

Why Microsoft is killing off OneCare | AV big guns should fear its free replacement

Microsoft has decided to kill off its paid security suite Windows Live OneCare and replace it with a free anti-malware package codenamed Morro.

Morro will be built to use fewer computing resources making it well suited to netbooks and low-cost PCs in developing nations.

Microsoft killing live One Care , givin Microsoft MORRO !

Microsoft killing live One Care , givin Microsoft MORRO !

It’s all part of “getting more consumers protected,” Microsoft says on its Windows Live OneCare Team blog, while a Microsoft press release adds that Morro will give the company “the ability to protect an even greater number of consumers, especially in markets where the growth of new PC purchases is outpaced only by the growth of malware.”

This is a smart move that benefits everyone: if Microsoft can help stop the spread of viruses on systems where the owners are unlikely to shell out for expensive security suites, then that makes the internet a better place for us all.

But why throw out a potentially lucrative product like OneCare, which will currently cost you £37.99 a year, when Microsoft could simply offer both products and let the user decide which they wanted?

Perhaps OneCare simply didn’t sell enough copies.

The security market is a tough one to break into, dominated by household names like Symantec and McAfee, not to mention the myriad of smaller names, which include Panda, Kaspersky and BitDefender. And then there are free anti-virus packages from the likes of AVG, PC Tools and Avast.

To make things harder for OneCare, many consumers found it hard to grasp why they should pay for one Microsoft product to protect another Microsoft product.

But the final nail in OneCare’s coffin came from Microsoft itself – in the form of Windows Vista. Quite simply, most of the functions provided by OneCare are already taken care of very well by Vista, and will be by Windows 7, too, no doubt.

Anti-spyware? Vista has Windows Defender. Firewall? Vista has Windows Firewall. Backup and restore? Already in Vista. So the only new thing that OneCare brought to the party was anti-virus.

And now that Microsoft is planning to give that bit away for free, that should worry Symantec and McAfee.

Microsoft gives a peek at next-generation software | Unveils Windows 7 after Vista

Microsoft released key details on Tuesday of the next generation of software that it hopes will run the world’s computers.

The software giant, whose dominance is under threat, said Windows 7 will replace the disappointing Windows Vista in January 2010.

Microsoft said the new operating system was designed to function like a tighter version of Vista, which launched in 2006 but was widely derided as a “system hog” that slowed down computers with features that most users never accessed.

Speaking to participants at a Microsoft developers’ conference in Los Angeles, Steven Sinofsky, senior vice president of Windows, said Microsoft was learning its lessons from Vista, by making sure that Windows 7 would be fully compatible with all relevant devices and applications on launch.

Among the innovations unveiled by Microsoft was a touch-screen capability that will allow users to select folders and control programmes without using a mouse.

Windows 7 will also feature faster boot-up times, an updated task bar that includes previews of open windows, a new desktop look and a set of features optimised for laptops. The new operating system also makes it easier to coordinate and access files over networks and to automatically configure settings for different networks.

The new software will ditch some prominent features included in Vista including Calendar, Windows Mail, Movie Maker, Contacts and Photo Gallery, which will now be available for free download from the Microsoft website.

Microsoft operating systems still power some 90 per cent of the world’s personal computers, though Vista has only racked up an 18 per cent share since its launch.

Microsoft has been hit by the growing success of Apple’s Mac computers and by the long-term switch of many computing functions to mobile phones and the internet.

Google is threatening Microsoft’s cash cow, the Office Suite of programmes, with online word processors, spreadsheets and presentation programmes.

Microsoft on Tuesday said it would launch free online versions of Office that would be supported by advertising. Many analysts fear that offering an online version could cannibalize Microsoft’s most profitable line of products.

But Rob Helm, a senior analyst at research firm Directions on Microsoft, said that both Windows 7 and Office Online should work out well for the company.

“Both are good improvements. Windows 7 will help Microsoft overcome the weakness of Vista, while Web-based Office is a direct response to Google. Many businesses will like it because they have lots of users who don’t use many of the Office features,” he said.
