Reliance’s BigTV has launched it’s DTH service on August 15th.
Big TV DTH will be competing with already established players Dish TV and Tata Sky. DTH operators in the country, Tata Sky, DishTV and Sun are estimated to have a user base of around 7-8 million.
The service will have 32 cinema channels, and will be distributed via 700 distributors across the country. It is estimated that India has over 124 million TV households, with roughly 80 million using the conventional cable delivery platform.
Following are some of the features that Big TV is promoting extensively in its advertisements:
- Picture-in-Picture (PIP) that would enable viewers to watch twelve TV channels at the same time on any TV set in the country.
- Enabled by worlds most advanced MPEG4 technology Platform for DTH services, BIG TV
- BIG TV DTH service is available at 1 Lakh retail outlets, including over 240 Reliance World and 2000 Reliance Mobile Stores, across 6500 towns in the country.
- First and only DTH operator to launch 32 Movie Channels and a Subscription Video on Demand service.
- BIG TV’s Fully Digital Home Entertainment Service is available at Rs. 1490 including three months complimentary subscription. (1000/- Installation charges extra)
The site is currently having lot of problem due to heavy traffic. I am also looking forward to obtain all the details about their plans. It is expected that Big TV would be providing the cheapest DTH service in India. The best thing is that they will be airing all the sports channels, which is not currently the case with Dish TV and Tata SKY.
Since the competition is hotting up amongst the DTH providers customers are set to benefit with this. Airtel is also launching its DTH service very soon.

Adlabs to be merged with Big Pictures
dlabs, the movie processing unit of Reliance ADA Group, may soon be merged with Reliance Big Pictures following which the multiplex theatre chain would be brought under the banner of Big Cinemas.
Industry sources told media that since Adlabs, which was already a movie processing unit and runs 180 screens across the country at the moment, would be ultimately merged with Big Pictures.
From 180 screens now, sources said that this number would go up to 300 over the next three to six months.
In a new initiative in the field of digital entertainment, Reliance ADAG today launched the Big TV DTH which would source movie contents from Hollywood’s Sony Pictures and various other production houses from Bollywood like Adlabs.
Group head (brand & marketing), Reliance Communications, Sanjay Behl told reporters here today that initially 202 channels would be beamed in the beginning, following which there would be an additional 100 (Eds Correct) in the next six months.
While Big TV would initially source contents from other broadcasters, Reliance has drawn up plans to produce content in-house by the end of the year.
For this, Reliance would float Big Broadcasting, Behl said. For a start, Big Broadcasting would launch a channel for kids entertainment, which would subsequently be followed by others like sports, news and business news.
Commenting upon the size of the entertainment industry, he said that from the present size of Rs 50,000 crore, this was expected to touch Rs 1,15,000 crore by the year 2012.
Out of this, the TV entertainment segment would be of the order of Rs 60,000 crore.
Saying that Reliance Big had not made a late entry into the DTH segment unlike other like Dish TV and Tata Sky, Behl maintained that the company was entering the market at the development stage.
With 95 per cent of the Indian households hooked onto the analog cable service network, there was a huge opportunity that most of the households would switch directly to the digital DTH segment.
Behl said that Big TV would be the first in the country to use the MPEG4 technology for getting the best quality sound and pictures.
Big TV had also entered into arrangements for showing Bengali and other regional channels.
