Confessions of a banned book lover!

The Stage Zero : My Love for books

My love for books dates back to Stone age,i read as many books as possible in school days and gradually developed a habit of reading. When i found out that there are ebook that i can download for free and read on computer ,it was like i was standing before an ocean of free knowledge. All I needed was a method to seive this ocean and filter out the relevant content. Google proved to be the best tool for the purpose and provided me with gazillions of links and titles.

This was the first stage : Discovering Google as a means to satisfy the need for books.

Then one day,I came across Project Gutenberg (If you remember , Gutenberg invented the first printing Press and the first book to be printed was Bible that came to be known as Gutenberg Bible!). This project aims to compile all the world’s literature as a single, searchable archive! But mostly the books were all in free domain means you can find Shakespeare but could not find Paulo Coelho. A book comes into Public(Free) Domain if it has no copyright associated with it or it is an anonymous creation of the author has died 100 (I dont remember exactly..) years ago. But you can not find magazines, comics, computer books ,tutorials and other study material there.

Second Stage : Discovering Project Gutenberg.

Inspired by Project Gutenberg and having studied its shortcomings, I decided to start a collection of my own. Since there was no use re-inventing the wheel, I aimed to collect the books that were not in public domain (means copyright protected!!) and the books that most of us needed (like new authors, thrillers, tutorials, study materials etc etc). So I started my collection . Searched the books on Google ,downloaded them, organised them, If there was some problem with the fonts ,i fixed it . If it was a document, i converted it to pdf. Converted it into other formats like chm, hlp, lit, jar etc etc. I did this for almost two months and had a pretty decent collection when i decided to share it with the rest of the world. This was going to be a big step as i was going to violate some serious copyrights.(I Will get back to it later.)

Third Stage : My Romance with esnips

Having figured that i was going to share the collection, I opened an account on esnips (in 2004) it provided 1 GB free space at that time. The name of the account was “Tarun Reflex” (as usual) . That was the first time i used the handle “Reflex” (‘Reflex’ also has a story behind it that is too personal, will definitely blog on it whenever i’ll feel over-expressive). I started uploading books and books after books.. Soon it grew to be the biggest collection on esnips with more than 10,000 books in 92 organized folder. All of them free to download and share. Most of the major authors were there (As you will find in the list that is given at end of this post).. I had more than 10,00,000 visitors in 6 months. Moe than 3000 comments and hundreds of daily-emails requesting for ebooks. It was also the time when Orkut was just started.

Fourth Stage : Break-Up With esnips.

Efrat Moshkovich. You know him? You better not. You don’t know this guy unless you break thousands of copyright laws.I assume him to be the copyright in-charge of ensips who mailed me about the repeated copyright violations. I was too much in love with esnips to accede this warning by my so-called father-in-law and then one hot morning in July of 2005, I woke on my hostel bed feeling alone & divorced-before-marriage. I was banned from esnips for ever,My all accounts were banned,my email id was banned from future registration,  they even banned the tag ‘Tarun Reflex’!! You can stil find traces of mt esnips account in google’s seacrh result while searching for ‘best ebooks site’.

It was really a bad day! But i still have a new esnips account that is still active and you can find few books here (Besides there is complete collection of Mills and Boon for all those romance lovers.)

Fifth Stage : Heaven behold the faith departed!

By now, I had a personal collection of over 1,00,000 ebooks ranging from fiction to bedas, Comics to whitepapers, science to jokes, biographies to movie scripts, magazines to audio books, study material for IAS,CAT,GATE,GRE,TOEFL,French,AFCEH,EC etc etc.. Books on computers acquired 15 GB alone! As i was interested in troubleshooting and hacking, i had pretty good material on the subject including hacking using Blue Boxes to new tunneling and proxy techniques .. Banned from esnips, i started a new community on Orkut by the name BOOKS AND BOOKS that is still active and growing (Why don’t you join it?). this time i didnt want to take any chances so i decided to send books by email as an attachment. Now there are more than 5000 email ids in my gmail contacts . I have sent 78 ebooks deliveries (containing 8-10 books each in delivery,on average!) Sent 22 Parts of Mills and Boon (approx 15 books in each part.) and thousands of requests. (Check the community for more details).

Sixth Stage : Sharing the Sources.

I have more links to ebooks than i have ebooks. The job of sending books by email is becoming more and more difficult day-by-day. Google changed its way of adding contacts to gmail making it hard to add bulk-contacts.  I get banned for 24 hours after every 500 emails i send , It takes around one week to send single delivery to all. recently i started a new blog for sharing all the links i have collected over the last 4 years.  I gave a seminar on Intelligent Information Retrieval that can be downloaded/viewed here..

However, I am posting my favorite technique here, Its just a single trick for google that will lead you into world of freedom.

This trick is based on simple observation  : Don’t search for books,Search for servers that host the books. In this way you are searching for a wider domain that is specific to the subject of your choice.

Find Apache’s (default) Index page (Apache is a web server)
Try this query:

+(“index of”) +(“/ebooks”|”/book”) +(chm|pdf|zip|rar) +apache

Find a particular eBook file
Try this query:

allinurl: +(rar|chm|zip|pdf|tgz) TheTitle

How not to go soft on terror | Meghnad Desai

India is weak on fighting terror. That much has been obvious, not just during the week or the month, but for 10 years and more. The reason for this is neither the nature of the legislation—POTA or not—nor the administrative set-up, nor yet the personnel, though having had two incompetent Home Ministers, Advani and now Patil, cannot have helped. India cannot fight Terror because it does not know what is under attack and what needs defending. Terrorists attack the fundamentals of a nation, but the leaders are disagreed on what the nation is. Like the blind men and the elephant, each side takes one piece and ignores the rest. Partisan bitterness about SIMI or the Bajrang Dal is really about who is an Indian who needs the protection of the State.
For the Secular Fundamentalist, Muslims can do no wrong and any crime that implicates any Muslim has to be due to the bias on the part of the security services. Thus the two Yadavs and Paswan oppose any ban on SIMI. When a terror attack happens, the media throttle their voices rather than say ‘Muslims’. It is always ‘the minority’, as if India has only one. This is the guilt complex dating back to the Partition, which the  Congress signed up to, and has been in denial about it since. So Muslims get patronised and neglected at the same time. The Sachar Report indicts 60 years of maltreatment of Muslims by secular governments and non-secular ones. Rather than do anything about the needs of Muslims, all we get is iftar parties.
A first step towards an effective anti-terror policy is to admit that while not all Muslims are terrorists, some are and they have to be treated as criminals by all parties, secular or not. The Sanatanist Fundamentalist is in denial about the right of non-Hindus to be equal citizens of India. The much-paraded Hindu tolerance means, for them, the elimination of all non-Hindu citizens. The BJP lacks the courage to denounce and disown its parivar. The shameful haste with which the new BJP government in Karnataka unleashed ethnic cleansing on Christians is a scandal with not a murmur of protest from the lauh purush. There would be a ban on the Bajrang Dal if the BJP were a truly national party.
A second step towards an effective anti-terror policy is for the BJP to say openly that Hindus have to live with all other minorities on the basis of equality and legality and mean it. But there is also the Class Fundamentalist. The Naxalite attacks on many districts of India are being dealt with in a weak fashion because the Left within the Congress and outside, which overlaps a lot with the secular fundamentalists, believes that the Naxal attack is justified—something about semi-feudal/semi-bourgeois, imperialist India which they want overthrown. They wish bourgeois democracy were not there so they could have a utopia. Thus the Left will not denounce Naxal violence with half the passion they denounce 123 with.
A third step towards an effective anti-terror policy is for the Left to say openly that it is against all extra-judicial killing and guerrilla warfare regardless of the colour of the gangsters’ flag. India needs to affirm the Rule of Law without fear or favour to any minority or majority. It needs to deal with the crimes of terrorists, whether Islamist, Sanatanist or Maoist. Criminals have to be brought to book without regard to religion, region, gender or age. India needs an all-party consensus on what is being defended against terrorist attack. But there also needs to be a keen awareness to rights, yes, even of terrorists. There is too much presumption of guilt in police statements and media harangues. As much as one side refuses to attribute guilt to a Muslim or a Hindu, the other side rushes to cast the first stone. India allows drugging of suspects—narco-testing—violating fundamental rights. Even after 40 years of terrorism, if Britain can have human rights awareness in Parliament and outside, India can and should have it too.

How to Download Wikipedia?

Tags: , , , , , , , , ,

Last night in my Orkut Community Books and Books , I found a request for encyclopedia , a member wanted history encyclopedia with images.

So here is a way to download the biggest encyclopedia

Wikipedia – A huge ultimate reference material and knowledge hub which attracts millions of people everyday who are drowned in the deep linked articles filled with huge amount of information. If you do a quick search on the Internet for wikipedia cd’s then you will get lot’s of products containing wikipedia articles, pages which are required to be purchased.

But the cost is a bit too expensive, also there are some free service discussed in this post which allows you to read and download the content and required articles to access wiki offline. Not everyone has a unlimited Internet connection or many people tend to use Wiki as a source of  reference offline as it is much faster and easy.

Definitely you can’t save each page of wikipedia pages on your hard disk, even if you do then it takes lot of time.So if you are wondering how to get most of the articles pages easily and for free then read on..

Do you know that it is possible to download the entire Wikipedia Encyclopedia to your computer and use it offline. Other than static HTML pages, you can also download all the images and photographs from the Wikipedia website in one go.

The full Wikipedia website and the images are available in zipped format that can be extracted using the free 7-zip utility.

Example:
Download Wikipedia HTML webpages – Nov 2006 Dump

Download Wikipedia Images – November 2005 Dump

These dumps are intended for private viewing in an intranet or desktop installation – you may not host them on a public website.

Geeks may prefer to download Wikipedia Database Dumps that are vast and have more current information than the static HTML dumps. These are essentially XML files for MediaWiki software that can be imported back in SQL databases using freely available php scripts. However, These methods are not easy.

For more visit this :  http://download.wikimedia.org/

Download Wikipedia free Package :

Pocket Wikipedia is a excellent freeware application which downloads the  Wikipedia pages to your PC and Windows Mobiles for offline usage. This Pocket Wikipedia has a 175 MB zipped fileof Wikipedia articles with 14 Million words and 24,000 images (size of a fifteen volume encyclopedia ) which has enough pages and required information to access offline.

Pocket wikipedia works on Windows Mobiles, Linux PCs and Windows PCs.You can download all the 14 million words with images, article, pages using rapidshare or primary download link.A good way to access wikipedia anywhere, anytime.

Click here to download Pocket Pedia (Primary download)

Click here to download Pocket Pedia (Rapidshare)

Firefox Offline Wikipedia addon :

Firefox browser supports addons which makes it one of the finest useful browser, here is a tricky addon called as Zipedia. When you have no Internet, or when the Internet is so slow, this addon will help you access everything offline on your computer.Zipedia can process such compressed wiki dump to be used locally on your computer.

Example – ‘wikipedia://wiki/Egypt’ for immediate offline access to a wikipedia article without Internet connection.

First you will have to download the wikipedia XML dump for offline use (no need to run neither MySQL nor mediawiki ).Now install the Zipedia addon and Go to Tools-> Add-ons-> zipedia-> preferences. The wizard will guide you through the steps of downloading the wikipedia XML dump (~3G for the English wiki) and the conversion process which is simple and will take few hours.

Download XLM wiki dump

Download Firefox extension Zipedia

Note: While it is possible to download wikipedia using software like wget or httrack, Wikipedia policies prohibit using web crawlers to download large number of articles from Wikipedia servers.

Ultra Surf : One of the best proxy surfing technology

Backdoor

I’ve recently discovered most secure way to unlock any kind of filters n’ firewalls, it is a kind of breakthrough in right for 100% information for people … We in offices or college can use it to breakthrough the firewalls and proxys’.

So what exactly it is??

It is the flagship software product from UltraReach Internet Corp. for Internet anti-censorship. It enables users inside countries with heavy Internet censorship to visit any public web sites in the world safely and freely. it enables users to browse any website freely just the same as using the regular IE browser while it automatically searches the highest speed proxy servers in the background.

Ultra surf

 Learn More

What does it means??

  • 100% freedom to have 100% information in most secure way.
  • It means no matter where you are you can access 100% free version of internet I mean no firewalls no restriction nothing….
  • Almost all schools, universities and corporate offices raise firewalls to filter out not work related sites, now those firewalls will be of no use or they have to change their plans.
  • Everybody can access various social networks like Orkut, Youtube, Myspace, Hi5, Facebook, Linkedin etc. which are blocked almost in 99% schools and offices.
  • 100% real time and it’s encryption is better then any online banking system.

How to get going??

It’s very simple you have to just-

  • download an exe file
  • then extract it
  • and run
  • Set proxy if u have any (generally in offices internet are provided through proxies, you can find that, through tools>>internet options>>Connections>>LAN Settings>> there you are with proxy server for your LAN and it’s port
  • Just copy that to proxy settings of Ultrasurf.
  • Then a window will pop up, says some thing in Chinese, just close this window
  • And open fresh internet explorer
  • There you are, you can surf any information.
  • For office people: beware don’t spread words to your colleagues keep this info as limited as you can, coz if system people got to know about it then they’ll take your comp for scrutinizing.

What is the Flip Side??

I should start with a quote that I’ve learnt in my life

“Too much freedom can Make you or it can Break you”

The flip side is that you can access to anything, I thing you got my point, In school, universities and Work office various sites are blocked to raise their efficiency and productivity, and it is very much likely that if anyone get freedom he/she will definitely try to miss use it.

[Update:02.02.2008]

Some Useful tips:

I’ve heard one thing many times that Ultra Surf is slowing down net speed or Ultra Surf is not working or something like that but after so many experience of Q&A and personal experience i’ve found that it’s not the Ultra Surf but it’s the net connection that has problemo…..

  • Check your net connection remember that it needs certain level of net speed to run Ultra Surf smoothly.
  • check proxy settings of Ultra Surf, when u download fresh version u need to tweak proxy settings of Ultra Surf. do that manually, also sometimes proxy setting of Ultra Surf get vanished automatically.. do check for proxy setting and feed it manually. For any kind of browser Proxy IP address is 127.0.0.1 with port :9666 and For Ultra Surf it depends upon your network.
  • 8.8 is the latest one and it is the best coz when there is no net connectivity it automatically flashes a message…. it won’t hang u there for retry
  • also last tip is that when net slows down or ain’t working at all, just exit Ultra Surf and re start it. instead of retry.. try exit and re start it…trust me retry is bad idea. just restart the whole thing.

[Update:10.08.2007] If you are using browser other than IE, then you have to manually change your proxy IP address to 127.0.0.1 with port :9666 of Firefox browser.

[Update:02.02.2008] For Mac Users, change your proxy IP address to 127.0.0.1 with port :9666 of Safari browser.
