Is it time to buy Apple MacBook??

With recent announcements about refreshes to the entire Apple MacBook family of laptops, no doubt, half the members of the Apple cult have already run out to the nearest Apple store.

But should the average PC user/gamer jump, too? Here are five big things Joe PC needs to know before deciding.

1. Die Integrated Graphics, Die!

Intel’s integrated GPU, which most Windows-based laptops use, is about as elegant as a moose in a tutu. With today’s Apple announcement, a reasonably powerful integrated graphics system is available for laptop motherboards: nVidia’s new GeForce 9400M. And the Apple MacBooks have it.

2. Double Your Graphics Pleasure

The new 9400M nVidia graphics chip set is like cake frosting for the new high-end MacBooks. Apple now pairs the motherboard GPU with an additional GeForce 9600M GT graphics-intensive application. This means games!

3. It’s in the Air

Someone at Apple must have said, “Hey, I love the MacBook Air’s keyboard. Let’s put it on everything else and use a similar slim design.” Done. For green techies, that also means fewer parts, less waste, and an all-around thumbs up from Mother Earth.

4. Show Apple the Money!

Most of the refreshed notebooks feature updated designs, slightly beefed-up hard drives, and roughly the same price as before. Run the specs before you buy.

5. Is It Time for PC Users to Go to the Mac Side?

The decision about whether to jump ship depends on how badly you want to play games (or use Photoshop) on a MacBook.Already, nVidia has deals inked with five of the top 10 Windows notebook manufacturers. And as soon as next week, we expect to hear news of a Windows-based notebook flaunting the same 9400M.

Let’s dig a little deeper into all of this.

A New Graphics Game

Matt Peckham, PC World’s Game On columnist, got it half right the other day when he pondered whether the new MacBook Pros would prove to be decent gaming machines. He was railing about how the GeForce 9600M GT is just the step-up model from the 8600M that currently resides in MacBooks.

But he didn’t factor in the new integrated GPU on the motherboard–the GeForce 9400M–which is stuffed into the new MacBook Pros as well. nVidia had planned to announce the release of notebooks with Hybrid SLI (short for “scalable link interface”) performance on Oct. 15.

Apple, however, is using Hybrid technology a little differently. At first, I wrongly assumed this meant it’d work the same way it will with Windows notebooks (see below). The way it works on a MacBook: You’ll have to toggle the mode and switch over to the other GPU and reboot your machine. Great for saving battery power in the long-run, but not as convenient as it will be on Windows machines.

What Exactly Does Hybrid SLI Performance Mean?

Hybrid SLI means that the on-board graphics power is sufficient to handle high-definition video. And when you want to run a more graphics-intensive app, such as DirectX 10 games, the technology flips the switch into a turbo mode where the two GPUs piggyback–conceivably boosting performance by 80 percent, according to nVidia spokespeople. Take that, Intel!

Sony notebooks had a physical power-toggle between two GPUs ages ago. That involved a toggle flip and PC reboot before working. It sounds similar-ish, but not the same as, what Nvidia’s offering here.

From the get-go, these new nVidia chip sets are going to be better than Intel’s current graphics option. But how much of a performance boost will these new machines deliver? That remains to be seen: We don’t have one in the labs–yet.

All in all, this looks to be a big first step for Apple (and for nVidia). Plenty of people have used Boot Camp with their MacBooks to obtain their preferred mobile gaming platform. For instance, PC World’s Matt Peckham (again!) played Dead Space on a MacBook with all the settings cranked to 11–and it ran without a hitch.

It’d have been nice to see something more than a 9600M under the hood, considering that it’s operating on its own in the MacBook Pro. As for Windows notebooks, stay tuned, because that’s where we’re going to see Hybrid SLI in action.

What Steve Jobs Emphasized

Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO, emphasized the following points in today’s Apple announcement event:

  • The new MacBooks consist of fewer pieces and use aircraft-grade aluminum.
  • Smaller and more rigid machines should prove to be more durable.
  • The laptops have backlit LED displays.
  • They also have big, bad mousepads. (Does that make them ratpads?)
  • The keyboard introduced on the original Air is now available on more MacBook models.

Many users considered taking the plunge into the Apple pool when the first MacBook Air came out. But unfortunately that stylish mobile PC lacked some things that matter (ports, for example). So now, with every new MacBook, we expect to encounter some additional mind-blowing industrial design innovation that will finally propel us off the high dive despite our reluctance.

During the company’s press event today, the talking Apple heads spoke of the joys of ID and the unibody aluminum aesthetic of the Air. That’s by way of explaining why Apple has stamped that style into just about everything else rolling down the assembly line. Here are the highlights.

Keyboards

With most of these machines, you’ll see the same cut-out keyboard that Sony has been engineering for a dog’s age. (“Cut-out” means that the frame of the laptop looks as though someone had punched holes in it to pop QWERTY keys through). That design is now Apple’s standard.

Touch PADs

Another innovation is the big, glass touch screen that camps at the bottom of Apple laptops. The company says that the pad area is 39 percent bigger than before and that it now doubles as the button. You can perform the right-click function so beloved of PC users by mapping a corner of the oversize touch area to perform the task.

Ports

One thing I’m not completely sold on is the decision to stack all of the connectivity ports on one side. By jamming them together, Apple seems to be asking for trouble. Plug a beefy USB flash drive into one port and a USB mouse into another, and neighboring jacks might get covered up.

HD Video

Jobs today dismissed the Blu-ray format as a “Bag of Hurt.” Of course, given his not entirely unbiased position, he could hardly have done anything else but assert that HD video from iTunes is better. How about the lack of HDMI in the new notebooks? It apprears that Apple is really trying to push DisplayPort technology. Hence, the miniports on new MacBooks, and the introduction of a new 24-inch display.

Battery Life

Though crisp backlit LED displays are always a good thing, I’m a little skeptical about the 5-hour battery life that Apple promises with these new notebooks. We’ll have to put the laptops through our Test Center’s workout regimen before we believe anything regarding longer batter life.

My Take on Today’s Announcements

Before today’s event started, rumors abounded: an $800 value Mac was incoming. Sure, it would make a boatload of sense to try and create an affordable portable in this economy. But nobody was terribly surprised by today’s pricing announcements. People joke about the PC/Mac exchange rate. Heck, Microsoft’s PR machine made a crack yesterday about a “Mac Tax”–paying a premium for the Apple name. Here’s a breakdown.

Announced: The white 13-inch MacBook ($999) comes with Intel Core 2 Duo, pokey Intel integrated graphics, 1GB RAM, and a 120GB hard disk.

My two cents: Is Apple offering anything new here besides cutting a few bucks off the price? If the company had crafted a real value machine, it might have been an interesting game-changer. With all of the talk about how the Mac OS is more efficient than Windows Vista, surely Apple could could have cobbled together a mini-notebook capable of running a low-key Leopard? In this economy, I’d wager that it would sell like hotcakes. Apple hotcakes.

Announced: The step-up MacBooks, starting at $1299, ship with the nVidia GeForce 9400M integrated GPU (goodness!) and 2GB of RAM.

My two cents: Are these step-up MacBooks better than what’s already out there? Hang on a sec. Running a quick spec check on a 13-inch notebook at the HP store, I find that you can assemble a dv3500t with 3GB of RAM and a250GB hard disk for about $300 less than the MacBook costs.

Announced: The Air keeps the same basic pricing scheme as the first-generation models ($1799 and $2499), but beefs up the hard drive (a 120GB HDD or a 128GB SSD) and the nVidia GeForce 9400M GPU.

My 2 Cents: What’s interesting to me about the Air announcement is that it puts this machine squarely in competition with Samsung’s recently announced NP-X360–which costs roughly the same amount. The two dance spec-for-spec most of the way. Apple has the nVdia edge, which could make it the winner, but Samsung offers more ports (and HDMI). Which is better? We’ll tell you after we test them both.

Announced: The 15-inch MacBook Pro (starting at $1999) is the real deal.

My 2 Cents: Of all of the Apple announcements made today, this one is probably the likeliest to sway people to embrace the Mac side of The Force. This is where you’ll see nVidia let you choose between two different GPUs on the same machine.

Apple Unveils new series of Macbooks | www.apple.com

Apple refreshed its notebook computer lineup Tuesday, introducing faster, greener machines and cutting the price of an entry-level model to about $1,000, all in time for the holidays.

The new computers, which Apple announced at a press event at its Cupertino headquarters, take their design cues from the lightweight Macbook Air notebook that Apple unveiled in January. Apple expected to start shipping the updated computers Tuesday and have them in its retail stores today. The computers have rounded cases like the Air’s and are made using a similar manufacturing process that helps to reduce weight and internal parts while adding rigidity.

“This is a tour de force of engineering,” company Chief Executive Steve Jobs told those attending the event.

That it may be, but some analysts questioned whether Apple’s emphasis on design over price was out of touch with the times, given the ongoing economic crisis and wide expectations of a recession. Other manufacturers have been cutting prices, and one of the fastest-growing PC segments has been the so-called netbook market, where machines often sell for as little as $300, analysts noted.

That’s a market that Apple doesn’t play in, and the company moved in a different direction from its competition. Except for its entry-level notebook — which sports an older design — Apple maintained its prices on other notebook models and even raised the price on one model.

updates will help “Apple maintain its image of . . . attention to detail and overall focus on the end-user experience,” said Bob O’Donnell, an analyst with industry research firm IDC. But, he added, “The price points are a little high.”

Wall Street analysts had speculated before the announcement that Apple might cut the price of its entry-level Macbook even further to $899. Investors Tuesday seemed disappointed that Apple chose not to go that far, analysts said. Apple’s stock closed regular trading off $6.18, or 5.6 percent, to $104.08.

At the event, Apple announced updates to its entire notebook lineup. The consumer-level Macbooks, which formerly came in a plastic shell, now will sport an aluminum enclosure, except for the $1,000 low-end model. The company is replacing the Intel chipset — but not the Intel microprocessor itself — in all its notebooks with one from Nvidia. Apple is also replacing the integrated Intel graphics chip in its Macbook notebooks with one from Nvidia that Apple says will run four to five times faster.

Additionally, Apple has removed a wide range of hazardous chemicals such as PVCs and arsenic from its new notebook computers or their manufacturing process. The notebooks have earned a gold rating from the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool, a service sponsored by the Environmental Protection Agency to help consumers judge the environmental impact of particular products.

Apple’s computer sales have outgrown those of the broader PC industry in 14 of the past 15 fiscal quarters, Tim Cook, Apple’s chief operating officer, noted at the event. The updates should help the company maintain that momentum — at least in the near term, analysts said.

Apple’s event may not have answered questions about its pricing strategy, but it did confirm without a doubt that Jobs is indeed alive and kicking. Apple’s stock plunged earlier this month on a false rumor that the iconic CEO had experienced a heart attack, one of a series of rumors or reports about Jobs’ well-being in recent months.

Jobs, whose gaunt appearance hasn’t noticeably changed in recent months, declined to take questions about the state of his health, but noted that his blood pressure is a healthy 110 over 70.

T-Mobile Preorders 1.5 Million G1 Android Phone

T-Mobile has already taken 1.5 million preorders of Google’s G1 Android phone, according to reports.

The staggering number of presales comes just 10 days before the T-Mobile-powered Android’s official launch date Oct. 22. Neither T-Mobile, Google or handset manufacturer HTC has confirmed the reports that first appeared on Motley Fool. According to the Web site, Apple originally thought it would sell 10 million second-generation iPhones Apple this year. The G1 preorders are three times the original amount of phones T-Mobile ordered from Taiwan-based HTC, which rapidly sold out.

Current T-Mobile subscribers have first dibs on preorders.

“Because of overwhelming demand, we’re setting aside even more T-Mobile G1 phones as a special thanks to you, our loyal T-Mobile customers,” reads a statement on T-Mobile’s Web site. “Supplies are limited, so this is your chance to order yours today before it hits the streets and guarantee you don’t go without.”

Pricing for the G1 starts at $179.99 for T-Mobile customers, plus taxes and fees; pricing is subject to upgrade eligibility criteria—a two-year agreement is required. Orders taken prior to Oct. 21 will be delivered around Nov. 10, the company said.

T-Mobile will provide 3G services in 16 mass markets, the company said on its Web site, eventually expanding to 22 markets by Oct. 22. By mid-November, that number is expected to increase to 27 markets.

Preinstalled Google features on the G1 include Google Search, Google Maps, Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Talk and YouTube.

An application storefront—the Android Market—features apps in addition to mashups of existing and new services from developers.

Some of the bells and whistles on the G1 include a touch screen, Web browsing capabilities, 3-megapixel camera, customizable home screen, QWERTY keyboard, IM/text/e-mail, music player, video playback, and 3G network and Wi-Fi access.

Apple iPhone to be priced @ Rs.31,000 in India | Unlock iPhone

Apple CEO Steve Jobs, who had promised at Worldwide Developer’s Conference on June 10 while unveiling 3G iPhone that it would be made available at $199(8Gb), is no more to be true in India. Now Indian consumers, who have been waiting based on Jobs’ promise have to pay Rs. 31,000 for 8 Gb and 16 Gb for Rs.36100.

The pricing is made available to the customers who have already made their booking on July 25. One of the Vodafone message says, “Your wait is about to end! iPhone 3G arrives on August 22. 8Gb model is for Rs. 31,000 and 16 Gb for Rs.36100.”

Earlier, the Bharthi Airtel operators said that they would make iPhone available in India at Rs.20,000, they are further breaking their promises. Both Vodafone and Airtel will be launching the iPhone on August 22 and industry experts say bookings and pre-launch interest suggest that they would be able to sell over 100,000 phones in the next 12 months. Companies like Vodafone, which opened bookings for the phones in July, have already received booking requests of over 10,000 phones.

Apple Iphone is one of the most expected gadget to be launched in india

Unlocked Apple Iphones are available in Indian at many places though by illegal means. But Iphone price in india is too high with major shops .

Where to buy Iphone in INDIA :

Best way to get hold of an Iphone in India is to ask someone to bring it from USA .
You can get a 4 GB Model for around 12000(or even less upto 10000).RS in this case aND AN 8 GB Model for 16,000.RS
But you have to unlock such phone by using third party softwares available .

      Unlocking Apple Iphone in India:

Unlocking an Iphone is not so difficult. Many easy methods are there which can found by googling.

Hackers across the country are working overtime to find ways to unlock the SIM cards that will come with Apple’s iPhone once it is launched at the stroke of midnight on August 22. Since the SIM-locked iPhone will be sold by Airtel and Vodafone Essar, non-Airtel /Vodafone GSM subscribers won’t be able to use it unless codes are available to break the SIM lock.

While Airtel and Vodafone Essar executives aren’t ruling out the likelihood of the much-hyped phone being hacked within days of its India launch, the companies were unwilling to comment on the safeguards that have been put in place to keep hackers at bay.

However, a brand new way to unlock the phone is now available, in case the hacking software doesn’t work. A mobile phone expert, speaking on condition of anonymity, told ET: “If your iPhone is loaded with 04.02.13_G, the 1.1.2 firmware (read: the latest version), it cannot be unlocked with any software. A Turbo SIM card, available for upwards of Rs 1,500, does what a hacking software cannot do even for the latest version of iPhone. The manufacturers are claiming it will not get locked again—an issue that plagued earlier hacking methods.”

The Turbo SIM may not be available in India immediately , but one can always order it online or even do a Google to unravel ways to use the card to unlock the iPhone. Airtel and Vodafone officials remain unfazed. “SIM lock-related issues will have obviously been addressed by Apple.

The phe-nomenon isn’t new as codes to break the iPhone SIM locks have evolved in global markets where the phone has been launched. One cannot rule out such a phenomenon in India. But since the iPhone is being offered at a full-blown price in India, all network-related issues will have been factored in,” said a top Airtel executive.

Officials at Vodafone said: “We are launching the 3G iPhone in two variants—8 GB and 16GB. The operating system is proprietary of Apple and we cannot share any further details.” While both Vodafone and Airtel execs remain tightlipped on the actual operating system/version that will power the iPhone in India, ET has learnt the phone may be launched with the latest iPhone 2.0 software update.

If you are not an Airtel or Vodafone Essar user but are still keen to use the phone, you first need to find out the version of your iPhone. To find out the firmware (version ), open the emergency call menu on the iPhone and type *3001#12345#*, suggests a software spe-cialist .

Detailed instructions are available online, but the process basically involves copying the information from your SIM onto a Turbo SIM, and then switching your SIM for your carrier SIM. This al-lows the Turbo SIM to piggyback on your carrier SIM, and report-edly gives the phone full calling, SMS and EDGE capabilities. For older versions of the software, a quick search on Google will throw up a number of ways to unlock the SIM. Such software is freely avail-able on the internet.

      HOW TO UNLOCK Apple iPhone:

Here is the updated QuickPwn for Windows, wrapped by Poorlad’s GUI. It contains new bundles for 2.0.2 and added support for version 2.0 devices which means you can QuickPwn and jailbreak the device if it is running 2.0, 2.0.1 or 2.0.2.
Remember this is still beta software, so usual rules apply, no complaints ifanything goes wrong and use the tool at at your own risk!

      DOWNLOAD SOFTWARE

NB: Using QuickPwn does not update the firmware itself, this tool is designed to ‘Pwn’ (the ability to install future custom non-Apple firmwares) , ‘Jailbreak’ and install Installer or Cydia on a given device. If your device is running 2.0.1 and you QuickPwn it, it’ll still be running 2.0.1, although it will now be Pwned and Jailbroken, similarly if your device is running 2.0.2 and you QuickPwn it, it will then be running 2.0.2 but the device will now be Pwned and Jailbroken. It will also activate (not unlock) devices that are being used outside of their intended territories and cannot be activated using iTunes.

If you want to update to 2.0.2 then use the normal iTunes update to get to 2.0.2 and then use QuickPwn to Pwn, Jailbreak and Activate, remember that the 2.0.2 update includes a baseband update for the 3G iPhone, so depending what your long term intentions are for the phone, update wisely, of course in the upcoming PwnageTool application you’ll be able to create a custom ipsw without the baseband update enabled.

Again, no updates with regard to the unlocking of the 3G iPhone.

(NOTE : I havent tried any of these myself so try at your ow risk! )

Thich Quang Duc : The Monk who burnt himself ! !

      thich_quang_duc_-_self_immolation.jpg

Thích Quảng Ðức was protesting against the way the administration of the President Ngô Đình Diệm was oppressing the Buddhist religion. His monastery was just outside of Huế in central Vietnam. The light blue Austin in which he drove to Saigon to commit his act can still be seen there (along with a picture showing his self-immolation, with his car in the background). After his death, his body was cremated. During the cremation, his shrunken heart still remained intact. It was henceforth considered holy and placed in the care of the Reserve Bank of Vietnam.Madame Nhu, the first lady of Vietnam at the time, commented with regard to this that she would “clap hands at seeing another monk barbecue show”. This supposedly resulted in her receiving the alias of “Dragon Lady”.Before Thay Thích Quảng Ðức self immolated himself, someone told me that he said to his followers that if his body falls forward, they should keep on protesting, and if his body falls backward, then they should stop protesting, his body fell forward after he died , so his followers still protesting, and Phat Giao VN Thong Nhat — Thay Thich Huyen Quang, Thay Thich Quang Do — still protesting for rights today from VN’s government VC today. His facial expressions looked calm and peaceful, not many people have the guts to self-immolate themselves like that and keeping themselves calm, and his heart is special, a Buddhism relic. I want to see his heart someday. I had no respect for President Ngo Dinh Diem or anyone that go with this oppression, eventhough some Vietnam people still commemorated his death, in fact he was assassinated because some people didn’t like his presidential actions, especially this oppression, he was a Catholic, I heard that his brother was a priest or something high in the Catholic church, but he was also assassinated ; his wife had no respect for Buddhism, she should have some respect, does she have the guts to righteous sacrifice to what she believes in, what an ignorant person, if she didn’t like Buddhism so what but have some respect. She was a Catholic, too. At this time because of a Catholic president, other religions — Buddhism PGVNTN, Phat Giao Hoa Hao, Cao Dai, were oppressed, Buddhism PGVNTN was the strongest, I guess that why this president and his followers wanted VN to have only one religion — Catholic, but too bad, Buddhism PGVNTN still remain strong and have a big influence today……see how Buddhism is not poison, as someone that mentioned in War of Words, but have moved to Culture Shock, in fact an Indian king, Asoka, followed Buddhism after he had acknowledged of what he had done, research on him for more information , Buddhists in this oppression protested in a peaceful way…..this is one of VN’s shameful piece of history, I hope there will be no repetition like this again, if one don’t like what others believe, then fine, but don’t do evil like what happened in this opppression, or he/her had sinned………

Artist’s rendition of Quang Duc   thich_quang_duc_heart.gif It is so amazing that some monks in Buddhism have special relics after they were cremated, they must have reach to the some high level. This is true, more information, click here http://www.maitreyaproject.com/en/relic.html. There are many things in this world that remained unsolved, undiscovered, unpredictable, etc…..

The last words of Thich Quang Duc before his self-immolation were documented in a letter he had left::

Before closing my eyes and moving towards the vision of the Buddha, I respectfully plead to President Ngo Dinh Diem to take a mind of compassion towards the people of the nation and implement religious equality to maintain the strength of the homeland eternally. I call the venerables, reverends, members of the sangha and the lay Buddhists to organise in solidarity to make sacrifices to protect Buddhism.

I just found out that Madame Ngo Dinh Nhu was First Lady of South Vietnam from 1955-1963 eventhough President Ngo Dinh Diem was the president and also her brother in law. She was born as Tran Le Xuan; she converted from Mahayana Buddhism to Roman Catholicism; her parents disowned her because of her role in the persecution of Buddhists (her parents must have thought what have we done to have one disobedient and disrespectful daugther, converting to another religion, but also mocking her born religion, Buddhism). Her husband was assassinated with President Ngo Dinh Diem, during this assassination she was in California with her daugther Ngo Le Thuy…after this assassination, it was a downfall for the Dinh families….she was not allowed to return back to South Vietnam, her daughter died in a car accident in France, she was robbed of more than $132,000 worth of jewelry in Italy, her brother Tran Van Khiem was charged in the strangling deaths of their parents (if this was true, empathy to her parents for having impious children). She clearly doesn’t understand Buddhism, what she had said about the self-immolation of Buddhist monks were from plain ignorance…..again does she has the bravery to self-immolate herself for what she believes or if her belief was oppressed. Self-immolating yourself isn’t a laughable matter, very painful in which one must have the guts, audacity, etc. This self-immolation was the reponse back from Buddhishts in the oppression in a peaceful way not in a violent way to let others know how serious this oppression was, how Buddhism in Vietnam was oppressed, like if one entitled rights were oppressed, one will not be subdued to any authority, one would rather die in honor like how the samurai, they would rather kill themselves before their enemies have the chance to do so……about Madame Ngo Dinh Nhu…..it is probably what she had done that lead to her misfortune (KARMA).
